The Paralympics(残腔肢枯奥会) are coming to Beijing in September of 2008, and it is obvious that Beijing is preparing for them. Maybe you do not know what some of the special preparations are for the Paralympics.
To begin with, all the venues(比赛场地) for the sports events will be accessible(可达到的) to people in wheelchairs. The same is true of the new buildings for the athletes(运动员) as well as their dining halls, work-out rooms, and toilets.
Elsewhere in Beijing, the wellbeing(生活状况) of people in wheelchairs will also be taken food care of.
The new airport will be totally accessible as well as the new subway line(地铁线) into the city. More buses that can accommodate(容纳) wheelchairs will be added in each district(区) of the city. Also many cultural sites are being modified(装修) to accept wheelchairs. All the gates in the Forbidden City(紫禁城) have been modified with ramps(斜坡) or the door sills(门槛) which are made removable for easy access. At Beihai, there is a new wheelchair lift at the stairs to the Tuan Cheng beside the south gate. All the structures in Tuan Cheng, including the Jade Buddha Temple(玉佛寺) now have wheelchair ramps. The Temple of Heaven(天坛) has maps showing handicapped(残饥枯疾的) people how to get around to see everything.
Such changes are taking place everywhere in Beijing. Even the Wangfujing shopping street is becoming more accessible.
This new accessibility is good not only for the Paralympics athletes and Beijing's foreign guests; it is also good for our handicapped Chinese citizens who will now have greater accessibility to culture sites and even the shopping areas.
Good work, Beijing!

The opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games was held on September 6th.I think it was very exciting. After the great performances, the flame was lit up by Hou Bing. With the torch on his wheelchair,HouBing used both hands to pull himself up along a hanging rope to the edge to the Bird's Nest to light the flame up.
I enjoyed the opening ceremony very much. And I wish the Paralympic Games will be held successfully.
