1. set vt.
(弊橡兆1)放;摆;铺放;安插。例如:
The woman set the table against the wall and then left.

2. set off(+for+目的地)出发,动身(去某地)。例如:
Tom and his father set off for America yesterday, and arrived there this morning.

3. set out
(1)set out(+for+目的地)出发,动身(去某地),相当于set off(for+目的地)。例如:
The Chinese Team held a meeting for a whole day before setting out for Barcelona for the Olympic Games.
中国队在去巴塞罗那参加奥运会之前开了一整天的会。
(2)set out(+ to do something)开始,着手(做某事)。例如:
The moment I got home, I set out to do my homework.
我一到家,就开始做家庭作业。
4. set about doing sth 着手(做某事),其意义与set out to do sth 相同。例如:
That evening he set about writing a report on pollution.
那天晚上,他着手写一篇关于污染的报告。
5. set up建立,创立。例如:
In the southern states the slave owners wanted to set up a country of their own, where they could freely keep black people as slaves.

6. set down
(1)写下,记下,意义与write down相同。例如:
You had better set down your idea before you forget it.

7. set somebody to do something. 使某人开始工作。例如:租租
He set his son John to repair the broken bicycle immediately John got home.
