五大连池位于黑龙江省北部，北纬48°30′-- 48°50′，东经126°00′-- 126°25′，地处小兴安岭与松嫩平原过渡带，域内设10个乡镇，7个国营农场，11个部队农场，4个监狱（所）和1个森工企业，总面积9072平方公里，人口34万，是著名的世界地公园和国家重要商品粮基地。

《宁古塔记略》记载，“康熙五十八年六、七月间，忽地中出火，石块飞腾，其声如雷，声震四野，昼夜不绝，经年不断......人无有识之者。”280多年前的1719-1721年火山喷发时玄武岩流阻塞讷谟尔河支流白河开成了五个串珠相连的堰塞湖，故名五大连池。

五大连池是中国唯一的矿泉水之乡，作为亚洲第一、世界第二个矿泉城，旅游资源十分丰富。境内有世界地质公园、国家级沾河森森公园和库容10亿立方米的山口湖国家级风景名胜和自然保护区。神奇的火山、奔涌的矿泉、烟波浩淼的水鸟世界等独特的旅游资源享誉海内外。这里山青水碧、沃土流金、牛羊遍地、景色壮美、交通便利、人杰地灵，是新世纪旅游观光、疗养度假、投资兴业的绝佳胜地。
