他一动也不动，除了一根手指在他的面前上下摆动,好像在用它标记时间。
He almost lost all but his life.他几乎/差点/险些连命都丢了。

举一个例子吧
i like these apples all but the green one。
根据句子的意思，all和but中间可以加一个逗号，所以它就是除了…都的意思。
不能拆开的就是另一种意思。

you can take the all but my life/你可以带走一切除了我的生活
He was all but killed/他几乎被打死
The room was all but empty. /房间里几乎全空
They all came early , but John came earliest of all . /他们都来得很早，但约翰来得最早
