The Republic of Ireland, composed of 26 counties, is located on the island of Ireland, in the northwestern part of Europe. To the north, it borders the United Kingdom's Northern Ireland, and to the east faces the UK across the Irish Sea and Saint George's Channel. To the south is Spain. Ireland's central regions are largely covered by prairies and lowlands, and contain many lakes and marshes. Coastal areas are more mountainous.
