Most firms today have strong codes of ethical behavior, and they also conduct training programs to ensure taht employyees understand proper behavior in different situations. When conflicts arise between profits and ethics, ethical considerations sometimes are so obviously important that they clearly dominate. However, in many cases the right choice is not clear. FOR example, suppose NorFolk Sourthern's managers know that its coal trains are poluting the air, but the amount of pollution is within legal limits and further reduction would be costly.Arew the managers ethically bound t oreduce pollution? Similarly, some time ago Merk's own research indicated that its Vioxx pain medicine might be causing heart attacks, but the evidence was not overwhelmingly strong and the product was clearly helping some patients.Over time, additinal tests produced stronger and stronger evidence that Vioxx did indeed pose a significant health risk IF the company released negative but sill questionable information, this would hurt sales and possibly keep some patients who would benefit from using the product. If it delayed release, more and more patients might suffer irresible harm. At what point shold Merk make the potential problem knwon to the public? There are no obvious answers to questions such as these, but companies ust deal with them. and a failure to handle themproperly can lead to severe consequences.
Over the past few years ethical lapses have led to a number of bankruptcies . The recent collapss of Enron and WlrldCom, as well as the accounting firm Arthur Andersen, dramatically illustrate how unethical can lead to a firm's rapid decline.
