The Little Prince
Today I would like to introduce a famous book to you and share the fantastic story in it. Perhaps you have already heard about it, The Little Prince written by the great French writer and pilot Antoine de Saint Exupéry.
The Little Prince is a fairy tale not only for the children, but also for adults who own a childlike heart. It tells a story of a little prince traveling around the outer space, and also his experiences on the earth with different creatures. In the story, the author was then a pilot and his plane’s engines unfortunately failed, leaving him alone in the Sahara Desert, where he met the little prince for the first time. At first sight, without any self-introduction, the little prince requested the author to draw a picture of a sheep for him. In this way, they got to know each other, and then the little prince gradually told the story before he came to the earth.
One day on the planet where he lived, he found a rose seed and planted it into the ground. He regarded her as a companion. However, the rose turned out to be quite vain, jealous and proud. She declared that she was as old as the sun, but actually she was even afraid of the slightest wind. At first, the little prince tried to tolerate her self-willingness, but little by little he took those selfish words seriously. And in the end, he decided to leave the planet, so he said farewell to the rose. Having realized that it might be the last time they spent together, the rose told the little prince that she regretted for what she had said to him. On the point of departure, the rose wished the little prince happiness in future. Hearing these words that came from the bottom of the rose’s heart, the little prince found out that it is only by what one has done, not by what one has said that he should judge one person. He said regretfully that he was then too young to know how to love his rose.
With a broken heart, the little prince traveled here and there in space. He first came to a planet on which lived a king, who cared nothing but whether he was respected by others. Then on another planet he met a vainglorious person, who thought others to be admires. Next, he came across a drunkard and then a merchant, who kept on counting his possessions, stars in the sky. He weighed it a lot to possess stars. However, in the viewpoint of the little prince, it was a tragedy for the businessman to count the stars only and do nothing with them. As to him, he saw it very important to water the rose and talk to the rose every morning, and he felt it quite significant to sweep the volcanoes in his courtyard. He thought what he had done to the rose and volcanoes really made sense. Parting with the merchant, the little prince flew to a small planet on which stood only one man, a lantern-keeper, who lit and made off the flame every day. With no place to set foot on, the little prince had to arrive at another planet where sat an old geographer whose work was just to record the permanent things only. Finally, the little prince came to the earth, where he met the author and a lot of things and creatures.
First in the desert, the little prince came across a snake and the snake said a few mysterious words to the little prince and then it vanished. Then he came to a beautiful rose garden where he saw a world of roses and all of a sudden he remembered that he used to look on his rose as the unique one. Just at that time, a fox came on stage and requested the little prince to be the owner of it and finally the little prince agreed. The fox asked the little prince to take care of the rose because it was the unique world that belonged only to the little prince. ‘It is my rose,’ the little prince whispered, seeming to know the principle of the world. The fox also threw light upon one of the most significant principles in the world and I believe it to be the most important words in the book, ‘It is only with one’s heart that one can see clearly. Things of essence or the inner part cannot be seen only by the eyes.’
Unfortunately, the little prince had to leave the earth and disappeared in the desert, leaving the author alone in the Sahara Desert, waiting for help from others, and for the return of the little prince.
That’s the book of The Little Prince. In the reality, the author Saint Exupéry disappeared into thin air in 1944 during the flight across the Mediterranean in World War II, just like the way the little prince did when he came off the stage. Saint Exupéry left behind his favorite rose in life and went back to the universe and the mysterious nature, where we are convinced he was from.
