这里选第三个stiving是对的, 是现在分词短语作状语，修饰其前的had。strived是过去分词表被动，不适合本语境。

l这个句子考察的是句型have difficulty (in)doing sth 介词in 省略 就跟 spend time/money（in ）doing sth 是一个道理介词in 是可以省略的

1、这种题见到先把what引导的从句用括号划分出来，

即young people nowadays could not imagine （what difficulty their fathers had）___for a better life for their children.
2、然后吧这句从句删掉，变成young people nowadays could not imagine ___for a better life for their children.
3、然后我问你imagine后面要加什么？是不是要加ing？（因为imagine doing sth是个词组，imagine后还可加从句，但显然这选项里没有）

这里讲解一下为什么从句括号只能划到横线前：因为如果划到横线后，把从句删掉后就变成了 could not imagine for a better life for their children. 没有人这么说话...
