1. except前后两个名词是同一性质的，except for前后两上名词不是同一性质的。如：
Everyone went there except Jim. (everyone和Jim都是人。）
The desk is very good except for a bad leg. 这张桌子很好，就是有一条腿坏了。（desk与leg不是同一性质的名词。）
2. in the last few years在过去的几年里（后面往往用现在完成时）
3. the + 比较级，the+比较级：越……，越……。
这句话意思是：人们下海越深，就越感到凉。

1.except------除了A没有B
IN this class bobody was late except Tom.(==Only Tom was late)

He speaks no other language except Chinese(==He speaks only Chinese)

except for ------整体与部分的关系

This flat is good except for its small kitchen (kitchen是部分，flat是整体)
== This flat is good except that its kitchen is small.

2 in the past / last few years ------ 过去几年来+现在完成时

3 The deeper the people go into the sea,the colder they will feel. (从时间 / 条件状语变来的)
== when / if people go deep into the sea, they will feel cold.
又如：
if / when you stand high, you will see far
== The higher you stand, the farther you will see.

I would go to the party with you except for my broken leg.
要不是因为我腿断了,我想与你一起去参加聚会。
we have been to the party except Tom.
除了汤姆外我们都去过那个聚会.

在过去的几年里.

越..越..的意思 意思是进入海里面越深就会觉得越冷.

1except可接从句；except for接名词
2过去几年间
3the more...the more...句式 越...越...
省略号部分是主干，有主谓宾对应the people go into the sea及they will feel
译为：潜得越深，感觉就越冷
