Whenever I visit Facebook and try and find out what my classmates from university went on to do. It all seems fairly predictable. If they studied computing, they work in information technology and if they studied business they are business people. Law students become lawyers and Geology Students went on to be Geologists.
In China it almost seems to be the opposite. Sales teams are made up of Engineers and IT people. Doctors go on to open their own business. Science graduates often don’t even bother trying to find a scientific job. This is mostly because China produces far too many technical graduates and not enough people ready for modern China. For instance, my major is applied chemistry, but I can only find jobs as a chemical industry worker.
Final year students spend a lot of time worrying about their future. Maybe more time worrying about that than actually studying. In this Colloquial Mandarin Chinese lesson presented by Pickup Chinese we hear two students discussing their life and their future.
In a word, the purpose of university is making one become mature in a real sense and develop one's potentials.
