Try doing sth. 尝试做某事(这个只是试试看...)(试一试) （结果如何不能预料）

Try to do sth 努力做某事(下了点决心要把它做好了)(要把它做好) （有什么结果）
前者是还没做
后者是正在做
比如:
try to make a cake是准备做蛋糕
try making a cake是正在尝试着做蛋糕

I tried gardening but didn't succeed.

He tried （hard） to climb over the fence，but in vain.
