Newmark’s principal engineering achievements were associated with development of procedures and criteria for design to resist dynamic loadings from earthquakes,wind,wave action,blast,and shock.He was concerned with the development of simplified methods of stress analysis,appropriate for engineering design use,and with concepts and procedures for rapid computation of stresses and deflections of complex structures under unusual loadings.

The wide range of Newmark’s interest is indicated by the fact that he was selected to give the Rankine lecture under the auspices of the Institution of Civil Engineers of Great Britain in London in 1965 and the Terzaghi Lecture under the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1978.Both lectures were in the general field of soil mechanics and foundation engineering.
