1984年第23届夏季奥运会开幕式，首次把艺术表演融入，也没有明确那首是会歌，只是在开幕式的末尾，当地教师 Vicki McClure 带领观众表演了Diana Ross 的歌曲“ Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand) ”。所有与会者都被要求一起唱歌，因为体育场周围的屏幕上显示了这些词。来自世界各地的志愿者、运动员、观众，以及身着民族传统服饰的演职人员齐聚一堂。 大银幕上，日本、澳大利亚、非洲、拉丁美洲的孩子们手拉手，一起唱歌。随着歌曲的响起，一场盛大的烟花压轴随之而来。
